Patti Owens, RN, MHA, CNOR, CMLSO
Patti Owens is a national consultant for optical device companies and organizations including Rockwell Laser Industries and Cosmetic Bootcamp LLC. The focus is on medical and aesthetic applications. She is active in leading professional organizations and societies. For example, Patti has been an active participant and lecturer with the Dermatology Nurses Association (DNA). And she is presently on the ANSI Z136.3 committee as a representative of the Association of periOperative Registered Nursing (AORN). The emphasis – ”Safe Use of Lasers in Health Care”.
She has served as the past Nursing/Allied Health Board representative to the American Society of Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS) (2008-2011). And has served on the ASLMS Board as the Safety Representative (2012-2016) along with multiple committee appointments. She has been appointed as a co-course director at ASLMS’s international conference (2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019). Patti was recently appointed for the 2019 position of Safety Director for ASLMS. Patti has also been an active lecturer, coordinator and the former chairperson of the Nursing/Allied Health section of ASLMS (American Society of Laser Medicine and Surgery).
AsetheticMed Consulting International
Ms. Owens, owner of AsetheticMed Consulting International LLC, provides consultation services for aesthetic and medical safety programs along with in-office management services. Her expertise in the theory and clinical aspects of aesthetic and medical-surgical safety, along with performance of a variety of laser and light-based treatments, offers clients a national and international focus as to the present standards of practice in the cosmetic field.
Educator, Author, Mentor
In November, 2016, Ms. Owens launched OnLine Laser Training USA (OLTUSA) an E-Learning aesthetic educational course in conjunction with OnLine Laser Training UK. The course curriculum is for people who want expertise in the cosmetic application of laser and light-based technology. There are two core modules, “Laser and IPL Physics and Safety” along with “Light Based Hair Reduction.” These modules offer over 21 Contact Hours, approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing. The courses also provide accreditation by the Open College Network (OCN Credit4 Learning) based in the United Kingdom.
Upon successful completion of one or more of these online courses, Ms. Owens is available to aid in post-graduate studies.
In-Depth Understanding of Standards and Best Practices
As an elected committee member on American National Standards Institute (ANSI) she contributed to Z136.1, .4 and .3 for the “Safe Use of Lasers in Health Care.” Presently, she is serving as secretary of the ANSI Z136 SSC3 committee during its revision process. She is also an active elected committee member on the International Electrotechnical Committee (IEC) TC 76-WG 4 and 12 standards committees for international laser safety. Last year, she was appointed to the International Standards Organization TC 94/SC 6/JWG 1 and IEC/TC 76/JWG 12 for “Requirements for Eye and Face Protection for Lasers.”
Patti has served as a staff editor with Malady Cengage publisher. She had the honor of providing the education for the Texas State Board of Health Safety Inspectors for use of aesthetic devices for hair removal and was elected into the World Wide Who’s Who as an active member in 2012.
Boots On The Ground Experience
Ms. Owens is presently working with Dr. Mark Sofonio, Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, as an aesthetic nurse in Rancho Mirage, California. Her previous employer for 13 years, Dr. James Brazil MD, Dermatologist, practiced at the Olympic Dermatology and Laser Clinic in Olympia, Washington. Patti managed the laser/aesthetic and marketing program while performing a variety of cosmetic and aesthetic laser procedures. Her expertise encompasses laser and energy based devices in treatment of vascular and pigmented lesions, hair and tattoo removal, facial rejuvenation, and body contouring. She is also well versed in facial injectables for volumization and wrinkle reduction. She has been a clinical investigator in the planning and initiation of various FDA studies.
Patti’s past employment includes 15 years as the Laser Manager at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, WA. Her responsibilities included program development and supervision of 13 laser systems, implementation of the laser perioperative role, development of an aesthetic laser in-house and mobile program, and enforcement of safety policies as the facility’s acting Laser Safety Officer.
Patti Owens received her BSN from the University of Colorado in 1976 and graduated with her Master’s degree in Health Administration from Chapman University in 1996. Her co-authored book with Pamela Hill, Milady’s Aesthetician Series, Laser and Light Therapy, published in 2009 by Cengage Learning.
